In de kassen van het Westland maakt het gezelschap Dario Fo bijzonder muziektheater. Op hun theaterschool leiden ze amateurs op. Die leren er samen met professionals in musicals en in klassieke opera’s te spelen. Toch staat het voortbestaan van Dario Fo onder druk.
Dario Fo probeert een opera te maken over het gezonken cruiseschip Costa Concordia. Door subsidie perikelen komt het project niet van de grond. Uiteindelijk weet Dario Fo wél door te dringen tot het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam met een uitvoering van de Dreigroschenoper.
De groep wordt twee jaar op de voet gevolgd in de Mediafonds-documentaire voor Omroep West, Dario Fo, kwekers in de kunst. De Italiaanse naamgever en Nobelprijswinnaar Dario Fo (overleden in 2016) werkt mee aan de film.
Omroep West zendt de film van 64 minuten verschillende keren uit. Naar een idee van Gerrit-Jan Hofsté, scenario Tom Rooduijn, camera Martijn Tervoort, montage Vera Jong, producent Interakt-René Mendel, regie Paul Kramer.

In the perfectly straight landscape of the Westland, under the smog of The Hague, there are kilometers of greenhouses. This so called Westland, wonderfully also serves as a good source of community-art. From the village Poeldrijk, Dario Fo initiates and produces controversial opera’s and musictheaterproductions for years.
They call themselves entrepreneurs in art. Volunteers sew the clothes, greenhouse builder make decors, an endless amount of family members sing, dance or star as extra’s in the shows.
Dario Fo is always looking for ways to renew, to create ‘new products’ and to strenghten social cohesion in minucipalities and districts. The 64 minutes documentary focusses on this particular quest of Dario Fo: growers in art.
