Documentaire over de verleiders van Istanbul. Een handvol begaafde mode-ontwerpers in Istanbul is de glitterwereld van de haute couture binnen gegaan. De documentaire Sultans van de mode vertelt hoe deze zelfbewuste designers hun inspiratie putten uit de schatkamers van het Ottomaanse verleden.
Prachtlievende sultans wier macht zich over grote delen van Europa en Azië uitstrekte hebben een betoverende vormentaal nagelaten, die ook voor westerse ogen onweerstaanbaar blijkt. Zo was het vroeger, toen golven van Turkerie over west-Europa stroomden, en zo gebeurt het nu opnieuw.
Tegelversieringen en zijden weefsels, decoratieve gebruiksvoorwerpen uit paleizen en moskeeën; onverwachte details keren terug in de shows van mode-ontwerpers en kunstenaars. Ook het cosmopolitische Istanbul speelt een rol.
De haute couture die is ontstaan uit deze rijkdom, dringt zowel de mondaine zakenwijken binnen als de Biënnale voor hedendaagse kunst. En volgens sommigen zal zij ook verder de wereld veroveren.

A handful of talented fashion designers from Istanbul have entered the shimmering world of haute couture. Famous Parisian designers have been stealing ideas from the Turkish metropolis for the past few years now and Turkish designers are successfully establishing themselves among the respected fashion houses in western capitals.
The documentary Sultans of Fashion reveals how young, confident designers are looking to the treasure chambers of the Ottoman past for inspiration. The ostentation-loving sultans who wielded their power across large swathes of Europe and Asia have left us an enchanting stylistic legacy.
Exotic flowers, paradise-like gardens and arabesques and spirals from breathtaking edifices supply examples for new fashions which have proven irresistible to the western eye, both in the past when waves of Turkish influences washed over Western Europe and today.
Artistic tiling and silk hangings, the flowing lines of minarets and bathhouses, and decorative utensils from palaces and mosques crop up in fashion shows and artists exhibitions. Cosmopolitan Istanbul with its mysterious views and intimate bazaars also plays an undeniable role. In order to reveal the environment in which sultanate fashion developed and was worn, models provide an exclusive show of historic clothing in the renowned Topkapi Palace.
The haute couture these clothes inspired has pervaded both fashionable business districts and the Istanbul Biennial for modern art. And according to some it is set to conquer the world.
